Residents in Ondo East and West Local Government have been demanded to stop payment for electricity meters.

This was made known in a press release signed by the Coordinators, Olusola Akinbinu and Kenneth Adegeye, and Secretary, Atinuke Fadayomi, of the Ondo Ekimogun Youth Congress on Tuesday, January 26, 2021.

It read: “The leadership of the Ondo Ekimogun Youth Congress wishes to bring to the notice of all residents of Ondo West and Ondo East Local Governments of Ondo State THAT THEY NO LONGER NEED TO PAY FOR ELECTRICITY METERS (Be it prepaid or postpaid).

“The Federal Government of Nigeria has launched a National Mass Metering Programme (NMMP). The Framework of the program seeks to, amongst others, increase the country’s metering rate and eliminate arbitrary estimated billing. This program has taken effect from January 2021.

“It will be remembered that up till December 2020, Nigerians were still required to pay for meters, despite meters being property of the Discos. This is now being corrected.

“With the New NATIONAL MASS METERING PROGRAM, the leadership of the OEYC has spoken with the BEDC Manager in Ondo Business Unit and secured his commitment to the new metering program in Ondo. All residents in Ondo East and West Local Government are hereby demanded to stop payment for meters across the two local government.“

It further stated that concerning the issue of estimated billing, while waiting for the meters. Every resident who feel that the bill given to them is more than they consume should write a letter to the address of: The Manager, Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC), Ondo Business Unit.

The release however directed that they should, in the letter, state that they are over billed, the reasons they feel they are over billed, and the appliances they use electricity for.

It added that a photocopy of the bills that are overcharged should be attached, submitted, and ensured acknowledged (received) at the BEDC office. Make a photocopy of this letter and keep.

The Youth congress stated it may then compile the complains for further actions, should the challenge persist.
