A 29-year-old healthcare worker has died of coronavirus in Ekiti State.

Commissioner for Health, Dr. Mojisola Yaya-Kolade, confirmed this at a press conference in Ado Ekiti, on Wednesday.

According to her, the victim (name withheld) passed away at around 6.58am Wednesday morning at the Intensive Care Unit of Federal Teaching Hospital, Ido Ekiti.

Yaya-Kolade revealed that the 29-year-old  sneaked into Ekiti from Lagos last week and it was discovered that she had the virus after falling ill.

She, however, regretted that the late COVID-19 patient infected a 45 -year old medical doctor, who was identified as the fourth index case by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control.

“The woman showed signs of stability on Monday, but unfortunately, her condition deteriorated yesterday and we lost her exactly 6.58am today(Wednesday),” the Commissioner said.

The 29-year-old becomes the fourth documented medical personnel lost to the coronavirus.

Emeka Chugbo was the first known victim after being exposed to a patient at his private clinic.

A couple of days later, Dominic Essien died after reportedly exhibiting COVID-19-related symptoms in Akwa Ibom.

Then a medic with international medical charity Medecins Sans Frontieres (name withheld) followed, beaten by the virus on Monday in Borno State.

Two World Health Organisation employees tested positive and are in isolation.

According to NCDC, Ekiti has four confirmed cases as at Tuesday.
