Lagos State Government has officially announced the death of former Oyo governor, Abiola Ajimobi, aged 70.

Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, said on Twitter early Friday that Mr Ajimobi died of multiple organs failure due to coronavirus.

“We regret the death of immediate past Governor of Oyo State, Senator Abiola Ajimobi who passed on today, June 25, 2020, at First Cardiologist Consultant; a private COVID-19 approved care facility in Lagos State,” he wrote.

“The former governor died from multiple organs failure following complications from #COVID19 infection.”

He added: “On behalf of COVID-19 Lagos Incident Commander @jidesanwoolu and the entire COVID19-Lagos response team, we convey our heartfelt condolences to the family of the former governor and the people of Oyo state. May his soul rest in peace.”

Ajimobi, a two-term governor, had only been appointed Deputy National Chairman (South) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) last month.

Ex-Chief of Staff to President Muhammadu Buhari, Abba Kyari, Lagos East Senator,  Bayo Oshinowo and ex-Group Managing Director Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation, Maikanti Baru are other high-profile Nigerians to have succumbed to the coronavirus.

Nigeria currently has 22, 614 positive cases and 549 deaths.
