Mr Abdullahi Candido, Chairman, Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) on Friday, inaugurated the Kurudu modern market, along the Kurudu/Orozo axis of the FCT.
Candido, who was represented by Mr Lawrence Onuchukwu, Vice Chairman of the council, said the modern market would create job opportunities and boost economic activities within the axis.
He also said that the market was part of his administration’s effort at discouraging roadside trading, stressing that it would reduce unnecessary accidents.
The chairman said that the council decided to give out the shops, free of charge, for the next six months to ease the stress of traders relocating from the roadside.
“From today Dec. 20, 2019 to May 20, 2020, nobody should pay any penny in terms of rates or revenue to the council.
“This is to relieve the traders from any stress they might encounter while relocating,” he said.
Mr Yakubu Adamu, Managing Director, AMAC Investment and Property Development Company, disclosed that the modern market had 2,650 shops ready for use.
He said that the development of the market would among other things, create job opportunities and boost economic activities within the axis and neighbouring towns and villages.
He assured that adequate security arrangements had been put in place to secure the traders’ goods.
Mrs Ray Davies, a trader who had secured a shop in the market, commended the council for bringing the market to their environment.
She called on other roadside traders to relocate to the market to boost economic development in the area.
