The All Progressives Congress (APC) and its candidate David Lyon have been declared winner of the Nov. 16 governorship election in Bayelsa State in a historic election that saw the mainly Ijaw populated state falling into the grips of an opposition party for the first time since 1999.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) which had been in control in the oil-rich state since the return of democracy to Nigeria over twenty years ago, was pushed to the second place by the electorate, behind the APC, in the final result announced early Monday morning by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

INEC returning officer for the election, Faraday Orunmwese, the Vice Chancellor, University of Benin, said Lyon of APC polled 352,552 votes to come first while Douye Diri of PDP got 143,172 votes to emerge the runner-up.

The APC won in six of the eight local government areas in the state leaving just two to the PDP
