BREAKING: Senate confirms Buratai, others as non-career ambassadors

The Senate, on Wednesday, approved the nomination of immediate past Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai and other former service chiefs as non-career ambassadors.

It said the confirmation is in accordance with Section 171(1) (2) (c) and Subsection (4) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended.

Those confirmed include;

1. General Abayomi G. Olanisakin (Rtd) – Ekiti State.

2. Lt. General Tukur Y. Buratai (Rtd) – Borno State.

3. Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete E. Ibas (Rtd) – Cross-River

4. Air Marshall Sadique B. Abubakar (Rtd) – Bauchi State.

5. Air Vice Marshall Muhammad S. Usman (Rtd) – Kano State.

During confirmation, the Senate minority leader, Senator Enyinaya Abaribe (Abia State), informed the Senate that he was reluctantly seconding the nomination and he so seconded the motion moved for their confirmation.

Recall that Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, on Tuesday read Buhari’s letters of request on the floor at plenary.

The president had on February 4, forwarded the names of the immediate past military heads to the Senate as non-career Ambassadors-Designate.

In a letter to Senator Ahmad Ibrahim Lawan, President of the Senate, the President said: “In accordance with section 171 (1), (2) (c) & sub-section (4) of 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended, I have the honour to forward for confirmation by the Senate, the under-listed five (5) names of nominees as Non-Career Ambassadors-Designate.”
