The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says the conduct of a credible election is not the sole responsibility of the Commission.

The Commission’s Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Gombe State, Alhaji Umar Ibrahim, made this claim during the Commission’s first stakeholders’ meeting of the year.

He told the stakeholders comprising party’s officials, candidates, security chiefs, CSOs, journalists, traditional and religious leaders that free, fair, credible, peaceful, all-inclusive and accountable elections are a product of concerted efforts by all stakeholders.

In his words “Please, remember that the conduct of credible elections is not the responsibility of INEC alone but a concerted effort by all stakeholders”.

“I urge you to play your role conscientiously and responsibly as patriotic citizens of our dear nation. To our political party chairmen and candidates, we appreciate your partnership as key players in the electoral process”.

He, however, lamented that some undemocratic vices such as destruction of party posters and billboards, clashes between supporters of opposing parties, among others, were recorded in the state since the commencement of campaigns.

“I call on you to abide by laws governing political campaigns as enshrined in Sections 91 to 97 of the Electoral Act 2022.

“Arrangements are underway for the signing of a Peace Accord to enable peaceful conduct before, during and after the elections by political parties and candidates”, the REC appealed.
