After holding down its coronavirus invisibility for a long time, the flood gates seem to have opened on Burundi with three confirmed cases in two days.

The tiny East African nation confirmed its first two cases on Tuesday, ending the myth that they may be somewhat immune to the pandemic.

Both men were Burundian.

One, 56, had recently returned from neighbouring Rwanda and the other, 42, had recently returned from Dubai.

However, it appears that tougher times await the nation with another case confirmed on Thursday.

In a Twitter post by the Health Minister, Thadee Ndikumana, Burundi confirms that a third person, a female who is the wife of one of its two index cases has tested positive.

It would be recalled that KAFTAN Post had broken the news of the East African country’s two index cases who simultaneously tested positive.

This third case has also been confirmed by the Burundi Ambassador to Nigeria, Emmanuel Mpfayokurera to KAFTAN Post in a message exchanged in Abuja a few minutes ago.

Until yesterday, Burundi had seemed to be spared of the global plague, a factor which had made some to question whether the country’s authorities were conducting appropriate tests or that the country was doing something better than other African countries, especially her immediate neighbours in the Great Lake Region.

Mpfayokurera in an exclusive live interview with KAFTAN TV, however, maintained that Burundi was taking the same WHO recommended measures and has been conducting extensive testing.

The envoy attributed the lack of confirmed COVID-19 cases to the fact that Burundi started taking measures far earlier than most African countries and what he believed to be the “Grace of God” .

There are now more than over 6,700 confirmed cases of coronavirus across the continent, with a number of African countries imposing a range of prevention and containment measures against the spread of the pandemic.
