TheWorld Health Organization on Thursday warned Nigerians to continue to keep to safety protocols as the COVID-19 virus is still lurking around.

The WHO Representative in Nigeria, Dr. Walter Kazadi, made the call at an event marking the one year of first COVID-19 vaccine delivery in Nigeria.

Kazadi said: “It is worth stressing that COVID-19 pandemic is not yet over. We have seen that every four to five months, a new variant is emerging, taking its toll on the unimmunized population. It is important that we stop that circle by ensuring that we all get vaccinated on time.

“When we received the first donation, there was a lot of uncertainty around the world on vaccine supply. Some countries hoarded the vaccine. It was just one side of the world that they secured the vaccine while the other side of the world including Nigeria struggled with how to start vaccinating people.

“The first donation of vaccine through COVAX came with a lot of uncertainty and we were not sure when even the second dose will be administered. Nigeria has to make some strategic decisions if possible for people who got the first dose to get vaccinated the second time.

“This is one year today that the country has experienced expansion in the supply of the vaccine through COVAX. We are more grateful to the government of Japan for being magnanimous with the vaccine, because we have more than enough now.”
