Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has formally joined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) after his resignation from the All Progressives Congress.

Mr Obaseki left the APC after being disqualified from contesting in the party’s governorship primary for the state scheduled for June 22.

The governor arrived the state Secretariat of the PDP along 1st East Circular Road, Benin with many of his followers and appointees.

He was received by the leadership of the party led by its state Chairman, Hon Tony Aziegbemi.

Obaseki said he joined the PDP to advance his ambition to seek re-election.

He stated this in a tweet on Friday shortly after a video was shared by the PDP announcing his defection from APC.

“I have officially joined the @OfficialPDPNig to advance my ambition to seek re-election as Governor of Edo State,” Mr Obaseki wrote.

“I, as always, remain committed to engendering good governance and sustainable development of our dear state.”

Obaseki had on June 14 met two PDP leaders in the South-South region – Governors Nyesom Wike and Udom Emmanuel of Rivers and Akwa Ibom respectively – to discuss his future.

The governor looks set to become PDP’s governorship candidate ahead of Edo polls in September.
