A former Nigerian Minister and Senator, Jubril Martins-Kuye, has died.

Martins-Kuye died on Sunday morning at his Ago-Iwoye residence in Ogun State.

His death was confirmed by the current Senator representing Ogun East, Lekan Mustapha.

The octogenarian was a grassroots politician who became a Senator during the third republic.

Senator Mustapha described the death of the elder statesman as a big blow to Ogun and Nigeria, saying, “he was a mentor and a pathfinder.”

Martins-Kuye marked his 80th Birthday on August 16, 2020 and was celebrated by many, including President Muhammadu Buhari.

He was appointed Minister of State for Finance in June 1999 during the first term of President Olusegun Obasanjo, after he failed in his bid to emerge as the People’s Democratic Party candidate for governor of Ogun State in 1999.

He was appointed the Nigerian Minister of Commerce and Industry on April 6, 2010 and ceased to be a minister in 2011 to mark his retirement.
