Ex-Unilag VC, Prof. Ibidapo-Obe, dies of Covid-19

The Former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Akoka, Professor Oyewusi Ibidapo-Obe, is dead

KaftanPost correspondent gathered that the academia died on Sunday in Lagos. He was aged 71.

According to reports, he died of COVID-19. However, efforts made to confirm this proved abortive as at Press time.

The Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, UNILAG branch, Dr Dele Ashiru, confirmed the former VC’s death to newsmen.

Ashiru described the late Professor as “a quintessential educationist”. He added that “he will greatly be missed in the education sector”.

It will be recalled that late Ibidapo-Obe, was the President of the Nigeria Academy of Science. He attended both Ilesa Grammar School and Igbobi College from 1962–1968 and the University of Lagos from 1968-1971.

He was appointed substantive Vice-Chancellor on 1st May, 2002 and successfully served until the end of his tenure on 30th April 2007

He was conferred with the national honour as Officer of the Federal Republic (OFR) by the Federal Republic of Nigeria in 2004. He was the Apeluwa of Ile-Ife.
