The first Military Governor of Jigawa State, General Olayinka Sule, has died aged 72.

Gen. Sule passed away on Sunday afternoon in Lagos after a Saturday night party at the Ikeja Club.

Born on May 8, 1948, Lt. Colonel Sule became military attache to the permanent mission of Nigeria to the United Nations in 1983.

Sule climbed through the military ranks  and was named the first Administrator of Jigawa after it was carved out of  Kano State in August 1991 by General Ibrahim Babangida.

His reign, however, ended in January 1992.

He then handed over to the elected civilian governor, Ali Sa’ad Birnin-Kudu, at the start of the Third Republic.

In 1996, Sule was General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 1st Mechanised Division of the Nigerian Army.

He retired from the army that year.

Sule would spend most of his post-retirement years enjoying the game of golf.

He was captain of the Ikeja Golf Club, winning several tournaments.
