Experts and futurists have theorized on what the end of human civilization might look like and what would become of our bustling towns, suburbs and modern mega-cities in the immediate aftermath of the extinction of humanity either due to a natural cataclysm such as weather phenomena, pandemic or seismic upheavals or astronomical impact or mankind’s own fatal self-undoing by any of our egoistic games of chicken with thermonuclear, chemical or biological weapons of mass destruction.
Well, wonder no more as COVID-19 has given us a practical illustration of what the first few weeks of the end would look like way before time, weathering, flora, fauna, patina and wind take their tolls.
It is a sobering certificate of existential insignificance issued to all mankind as if to warn us that our advent, sojourn and exit from this planet is not merely a flash in the pan but one that came with a whimper and might end with less than a momentary puff of smoke.
Whatever science or theology might take as our causation on this plane, whether a creative God or some great intelligence breathed life into us or we came in a big bang, our departure might be less than a fanfare with neither breath of wind or even a small bang.
