Gunmen suspected to be bandits are reported to have attacked the convoy of Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom.

The incident happened at Tyo Mu along Makurdi/Gboko road around noon on Saturday.

The Governor was on his way to Makurdi when the gunmen opened fire on his convoy but were repelled by his security team.

Ortom is reportedly safe and was unharmed in the attack that was successful repelled.

The Benue Governor is known to be vocal against banditry and has vowed not to negotiate or grant amnesty to criminals.

In a recent statement, he said “for us as a government, we have declared war against the young men who are perpetrating these evil acts. We are going after them, no more amnesty and no more negotiations. Except they come back like the prodigal son which the priest referred to in his homily.

“If they come back today and renounce their evil acts and ask for forgiveness promising not to carry arms against their own people, that would help us reflect on the story of the prodigal son in the bible and embrace them.”
