How Gen. Abdusalami Abubakar’s committee tried, failed to save Sanusi from dethronement

Facts have emerged about how former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar and members of his Committee on Reconciliation and Resolution of the Crisis in Kano between Governor Abdullahi Ganduje and then Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II tried and failed to bring about an amicable resolution of the crisis.

A report of the 11- member committee obtained by KaftanPost shows that though both parties appeared amenable to resolving the crisis, they were all the same determined not to shift ground on the fundamentals of their differences.

While Sanusi, deposed on Monday as Emir of Kano by the Ganduje administration, was not comfortable with the dilution of the powers and influence of the Emir of Kano with the creation of four new emirates, particularly Bichi emirate, Governor Ganduje was determined to maintain the new structure which he claimed was aimed at bringing development to the state.

Perhaps the greatest impediment on the road to achieving a resolution of the crisis was the political/personal undertone which both parties tried to conceal but which was apparent.

Even though it was broached with both parties denying any personal animosity towards each other, the committee appeared hamstrung to make any far reaching and meaningful recommendation on this issue other than mere appeal to allow peace to reign in Kano.

But one striking revelation from the 29-page report of the committee was that His Highness, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II was a marked monarch for a long time due to his acerbic comments on public issues especially on the actions or inactions of both the Kano State Government and the Federal Government. Such comments as his criticism of the Lagos/Kano railway project virtually made him a persona non grata in government circles and his days were obviously numbered.

And his end on the throne finally came on Monday March 9, 2020 when he was removed and the son of the late Emir Ado Bayero, Aminu Bayero, then incumbent Emir of Bichi, named and installed the new Emir of Kano.
