Afrobeat singer, Oluwaseyi Joshua, professionally known as Seyi Shay, has opened up about Sound Sultan’s influence in her career.
In an interview with Chude, she revealed how the late Sound Sultan accommodated her in his house with his wife and kids when she returned to the country.
The ‘Yolo Yolo’ singer stated that they wrote songs together and became music buddies instead of friends.
She said, “Sound Sultan teamed me up with Cecil Hammond of Fly Time. Cecil and Sultan brought me to Lagos and I lived with Sultan for about a year.
“I lived with both him and his wife. He was my mentor, one of my best friends, .We co-wrote songs together.
“At some point, our relationship became less about music and more about friendship. He was like my ‘small daddy’ kind of. When I started getting into trouble in the industry, he was like my bailout, my defender.
“He was very close to me and then his wife became my ‘small’ mummy. He was an incredible genius.”
Olanrewaju Fasasi, also known as Sound Sultan, passed away in July 2021 after a battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife and children.
