Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has debunked reports alleging that he lifted the ban on religious gathering put in place to control the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19).

The governor, tweeting on Thursday, urged the public to disregard such reports.

“A statement is circulating in the press purportedly from me, stating that we have lifted the restrictions on social distancing regarding places of worship including mosques and churches. This information is FALSE and should be completely disregarded,” Mr. Makinde wrote.

He added that the state task force on COVID-19 would communicate to the public through its daily briefings if such a decision is made.

“As I stated in my press briefing on May 18, 2020, the experts are carrying out a risk situational analysis and we will communicate whatever decisions are reached through our Oyo State COVID-19 Task Force Press briefings in due course,” he wrote.

Oyo had 162 confirmed coronavirus cases as of May 20.
