Oyo State has recorded its first coronavirus death and fngers are pointing to Governor Seyi Makinde over his poor handling of the pandemic which many believe may be responsible.

Governor Seyi Makinde, in a Twitter thread late Wednesday, announced that the deceased died at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan before his COVID-19 test result came out positive.

“The COVID-19 confirmation test for one suspected case came back positive”, he tweeted.

“The patient died at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, before his result came out today- Wednesday; contact tracing has already commenced.

“As reported earlier, one confirmed case was transferred to Lagos, so there are currently five active cases in Oyo State.”

Recall that Makinde was accused of sloppiness when the virus first trudged into the country despite testing positive.

“Most alarming is the arrogant manner of negligence with which Gov. Seyi Makinde had been handling this COVID-19 war, considering that our past appeal has been falling on the deaf ears of the Oyo State Governor”, the All Progressives Congress (APC) said in a statement on March 30.

The governor finally shut down the state just over a fortnight ago but stakeholders believe it was a little too late as the virus had already penetrated deep.

Oyo State has 17 confirmed cases of coronavirus as of Wednesday night, out of which one person died and another was transferred to Lagos.

Ten persons were also discharged after testing negative twice to the disease.

There are now five active cases.

Mr Makinde’s perceived questionable approach is still being criticized.

After realising over N125m in donations from individuals and corporate organizations, the governor has reportedly hoarded palliatives. There’s also the report that the proposed distribution of face masks is yet to take effect.

Whether or not these allegations are credible, observers say Gov. Makinde has a lot to do to avoid further casualties in his state.
