Man held for setting stepchildren ablaze over rift with wife

The Nigeria Police Force Ondo Command have arrested a man in Ondo town, for setting his stepchildren ablaze.

The man identified as Ojo Joseph, in Fagun area, Ondo town, is reported to have lit up the room when the children were asleep. One of the children died.

Ojo was reported to have committed arson after a conflict with his wife.

The wife who had children before the marriage is also said to have sustained minor injuries in the fire.

The marriage produced a set of twins and although the stepchildren are concluded to have been the target, the 18-month-old twins also left with minor injuries while the four are currently receiving treatment over severe burns at the Federal Medical Centre, Owo.

The source said, “Four other victims are currently receiving treatment at the Federal Medical Centre, Owo, while their mother and the 18-month-old twins escaped with minor injuries.”

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Mrs Funmilayo Odunlami, confirmed the arrest.

The police claimed they are yet to know the main reason for the man’s actions.

Odunlami said, “We have yet to know why the man committed the act but we heard that he had a misunderstanding with his wife.

“He is currently in our custody and we have begun investigation into the matter. The suspect will be charged after investigation.”
