NBS reveals rise in food prices in July

The National Bureau of Statistics has said the prices of food items rose in July 2020.

This is according to its selected food price watch data for July 2020.

Contents from the document on NBS website on Thursday said, “Selected food price watch data for July 2020 reflected that the average price of 1 dozen of Agric eggs medium size increased year-on-year by 1.24 per cent and month-on month by 0.27 per cent to N474.12 in July 2020 from N472.83 in June 2020, while the average price of piece of Agric eggs medium size (price of one) increased year-on-year by 10.61 per cent and month-on-month by 0.66 per cent to N42.45 in July 2020 from N42.18 in June 2020.”

It said the average price of 1kg of tomato increased year-on-year by 49.35 per cent and month-on-month by 3.24 per cent to N304.01 in July 2020 from N294.46 in June 2020.

According to NBS, in the period under review, average price of 1kg of rice (imported high quality sold loose) increased year-on-year by 37.72 per cent and increased month-on-month by 2.23 per cent to N490.44 in July 2020 from N479.74 in June 2020.

The report noted that similarly, the average price of 1kg of yam tuber increased year-on-year by 50.10 per cent and month-on-month by 2.29 per cent to N256.44 in July 2020 from N250.70 in June 2020.

In another report titled “Transport fare watch July 2020”, the Bureau said average fare, which commuters paid for bus rose by 7.62 per cent month-on-month and by 26.41 per cent year-on-year to N247.46 in July 2020 from N229.94 in June 2020.

The information from NBS further added that, “Average fare paid by commuters for bus journey within the city increased by 7.62% month-on-month and by 26.41% year-on-year to N247.46 in July 2020 from N229.94 in June 2020.

“States with highest bus journey fare within city were Zamfara (N500.40), Nassarawa (N358.20) and Cross River (N350.00) while States with lowest bus journey fare within city were Bauchi (N145.10), Rivers (N170.00) and Kebbi (N170.20).”
