The Society for the Promotion of People`s Right, an NGO, on Tuesday in Abuja distributed sanitary pads and some toiletries worth over N100, 000 to the FCT residents.

The President of the organisation, Mr Williams Osaze, presented the items to Mrs Rosemary Dada, a resident of Jikwoyi community in the FCT.

Osaze said that the effort was to ensure effective hygiene and sanitation as well as promoting cleanliness in the lives of the people.

According to him, the aim and the objective of the sensitisation and distribution of the items is to promote hygiene among women and girls in the community.

“We have come to educate them on the importance of hygiene and sanitation.

“We discover that some of our women and girls are always shy when they hear or someone mentioned menstruation.
“Some don’t even know how to take care of their body when they are menstruating.

“So, we decided to sensitise to them on the importance of hygiene and also let them know that for someone to menstruate, it is not a taboo or an abomination as some culture term it to be.

“When you are menstruating, you can go out to do your normal duty, it shouldn’t be a time to lock yourself in doors or separate yourself from other people.

“We carried our sensitisation campaign to them and I believe that the effort will encourage them.

“The items could be small, but I know that they will go a long way to better their lives, ” he said.

Osaze said that the organisation would also carry the sensitisation campaign to other communities as well as public places such as Churches, Mosques, Markets and parks in the FCT.

He said while carrying on the sensitisation campaign, the organisation counseled and advised people on the importance of living a decent life.

“As well as encouraging them to stay away from crime or any form of vices that can expose them to danger’’.

The president of the NGO, however, advised Nigerians to embrace peace and learn how to tolerate one another, adding that such attitude would promote peace and unity in the country.

Dada, who thanked the organisation on behalf of the residents, said that the items would go a long way to promote the life of the community.

Also, another resident, Mrs Farukat Adamu, appreciated the organisation and urged other relevant stakeholders to emulate the effort of the organisation.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the items distributed are: bags of sanitary pad, detergents, cartons of Detol, Jik, washing soaps, Izal among others.
