Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala reaches final stage in race for WTO DG

Nigeria’s candidate for the position of the Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has reached the final stage in the race to lead the global trade body.

Ngozi is one of the two female candidates to proceed to the final stage in the race. It can be recalled that a number of candidates, including Kenya’s Amina Mohamed, scaled the first voting round.

Korea’s Yoo Myung-hee 

The other female candidate is South Korea’s Yoo Myung-hee. Yoo currently serves her country as the first female trade minister, following a career in trade diplomacy and foreign affairs.

The Switzerland-based WTO is expected to name a new DG by November 7 after a third and final round of consultation will begin later this month, which is scheduled to run until November 6, when the WTO would agree by consensus on the next director-general.

According to Bloomberg, sources at Geneva that were familiar with the matter to have disclosed this.
