Nigerians made the list of the most charitable people in the world, taking third place.

This is the first time Nigeria will be breaking such a record since the ranking started in 2009.

Considering the hardship the citizens are facing at the moment, this is something to be proud of, especially with the jump the country had from 16 in 2018 to 3rd in 2021.

World Giving Index (WGI) 2021 made the announcement on Wednesday, June 16, 2021.

WGI is a global survey with about 1000 questionnaires to be completed to reach the final results.

The metrics to reach these numbers include, money donation, volunteering time and energy, and helping strangers.

Nigeria ranks higher when it comes to volunteering time to support Covid-19 and helping strangers but ranked 46 when it comes to donating charity.

According to reports, Indonesia’s 65 percent, and Kenya’s 58 percent are above Nigeria’s 56 percent population in charity.

Nigeria ranks first in the world in terms of ‘helping a stranger’ with 82 percent of Nigerians indicating they helped a stranger.

For the first time, there are four African countries in the top 10: Kenya, Nigeria, Ghana and Uganda.

The report pointed to the fact that Nigeria has up to 80,000 non-profit organizations and 132 charities across the country.

“Many had been involved in creating awareness of the pandemic and distributing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE),” the report said.

Indonesia came first in donating money for charity, followed by Cameroon and Iraq.

Kenya came first among African countries, in the aspect of volunteering time, Nigeria came fourth in that aspect with 42 percent. Indonesia leads overall with 60 percent.
