The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has blamed the National Immigration Service (NIS) over the glitches being encountered in verifying the National Identity Number (NIN) of passport applicants.

Recently, the NIS said in a statement that its inability to meet up with the six weeks targets for the issuance of new passports and the three weeks target for re-issuance was due to the challenges created by the NIMC in providing NINs.

However, the NIMC in a press statement has accused the NIS of failing to adopt alternative verification channels provided by the commission.

The press statement titled, ‘NIMC restates its commitment to provide seamless identification and authentication services’ was signed by NIMC’s Head of Corporate Communications, Kayode Adegoke.

The alternative channels provided by the NIMC for identity verification were the launch of the NIN slip with QR code and MobileID app.
