The Police Public Relations Officer Zone 17, comprising Ondo and Ekiti States, Akeem Adeoye, has confirmed the assassination attempt on a Prophet, Kerubu Oluwagbemi at Idanre, in Idanre local government area.
The rationale behind the act was said to be a result of a leadership crisis rocking the Cherubim & Seraphim Unification Church in Ondo State.
Police also affirmed the arrest of the suspect popularly known as ‘King’ who shot at the Prophet but was unable to meet the target as expected.
While speaking with KaftanPost on the issue in Akure on Wednesday, the Prophet said he escaped death by the whiskers when the gun pointed at him by the assassins failed.
The Prophet explained further that a particular prophet who has never been their member but doing everything possible to be a leader is after his life because he has been tipped to be the substantive Chairman of the Ondo state chapter of the church.
According to him, ” we were in a meeting of Unification Church of Nigeria, Ondo state chapter, in Idanre when, suddenly, some people batched into the meeting which One of them brought out a gun, saying they said they were asked to kill me.
“The gun did not fire when they pointed it at me but it fired when it was pointed in another direction and all of us ran away.
“We have tried our best to pursue the case before the Nigeria Police at Zone 17, the headquarters of Ondo and Ekiti commands in Akure, the Police is taunting our efforts by releasing the suspect arrested”.
He therefore called on Ondo state government to wage into the incident so as to save his life from being wasted
Also another leader in the Mission, the Madam General of C&S in the state, Mrs. Apata Ogunbayo, said she was a witness to the incident which they all ran into the bush when the shooting started.
According to her, the assassins said they wanted to kill one person, which is Prophet Kerubu Oluwagbemi.
“We are the members of the Unification Church of Nigeria, Ondo state branch, but someone now came that he wanted to be the Chairman and we have been there since 2011. They just wanted to take the chairmanship position.
” That is why we are appealing to the state government and the National body of the Unification Church of Nigeria to wage into the issues because we don’t want to lose anybody”.
