Officials of the Nigeria Police fired teargas canisters at June 12 protesters in Lagos and Abuja as the nation marks Democracy Day.

The Police Force had earlier in the morning taken over the protest venue at Gani Fawehinmi Park in a bid to prevent people from gathering but that did not deter them as they converged at the popular Freedom Park Ojota and went ahead with their protests.

Elsewhere across the state, Daily Trust observed heavy police presence in many parts of Ikeja and its environs with armoured vehicles stationed at strategic locations including Allen Roundabout, Ikeja Under Bridge, Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, Ikeja GRA, among others.

Same was experienced in Abuja as protesters converged at the Unity Fountain, holding placards and chanting “Buhari must go”, “say no to injustice”, amongst other solidarity phrases.

On getting to Gudu area, Abuja, police officers started firing tear gas canisters, causing the protesters to scamper in different directions for safety.
