U.S President Joe Biden reached out to Nigerian President Bola Tinubu in a call to express his condolences over the recent catastrophic floods affecting several Nigerian states. The collapse of the Alau dam on the Ngadda River in Borno State has caused the state’s worst flooding in decades and forced residents to flee their homes. Severe flooding in northeastern Nigeria has killed at least 30 people and affected more than one million others.

The severe flooding has resulted in extensive property damage, displacement of families, and loss of lives, prompting emergency responses from local authorities and international support for recovery and relief efforts. President Biden acknowledged the impact of the disaster on Nigerian communities and extended the support of the United States in aiding recovery efforts.

In a message via X, President Biden commended President Tinubu’s leadership in releasing Tigran Gambaryan, an executive of Binance Holdings, who was on trial in Nigeria for alleged money laundering and currency speculations. Gambaryan is an American citizen and former U.S. law enforcement official. The release has been celebrated internationally as a testament to Nigeria’s commitment to human rights and humanitarian assistance.

President Biden and President Tinubu also discussed the value of the partnership between Nigeria and the United States, highlighting shared goals in security, economic growth, and sustainable development. The conversation emphasized mutual interests in stability across West Africa and addressing global challenges, including climate resilience in vulnerable regions.

The White House detailed the context of Biden’s call to Tinubu in a press statement.

This conversation underscores the growing bilateral relationship between the U.S. and Nigeria, particularly as both countries work together to tackle regional crises and support long-term economic and social development.
