Russia’s Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova described the invasion of the US Congress Building on Capitol Hill by mobsters as “an internal affair” in an attempt to exempt Trump from the saga.
The Russian government is known to be interested in Trump’s government as they enjoyed good relations in his term.
Zakharova also blamed the US electoral system as being “archaic”, taking side with Trump that the election was marred with irregularities.
“The electoral system in the United States is archaic, it does not meed modern democratic standards , creating opportunities for numerous violations , and the American media have become an instrument of political struggle, ” Russian news agencies reported Zakharova as saying.
“This is largely the reason for the split in society now observed in the United States.
On Wednesday, Trump’ supporters protesting Congress’ certification of Joe Biden’s presidential win clashed with police, breaching the Capitol building and making their way to the Senate floor.
At least four people died after the mob breached the building, including one woman shot by Capitol Police.
Trump, before his election, declared his support for warmer relations with Russia at a campaign rally and when he emerged, he maintained a suspicious relationship with Vladimir V. Putin that received condemnation from Democrats and some conservative national security leaders.
Russia was also accused of interference and manipulation via hacking of sensitive servers, the election that brought Donald Trump to power, an allegation the outgoing President, Putin and the Russian government denied.
