Mr Ugochukwu Okeke, Chairman, Joint National Association of Persons Living With Disabilities, Anambra Chapter has advised persons living with disabilities to see their unique nature as a challenge to contribute to the development of the state.
Okeke gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Awka on Tuesday as the International Community observes Dec.3 as a day for persons living with disabiliies.
According to him, the 2019 theme for the celebration is meant to promote participation of persons living with disabilities.
Okeke said that every human being was born great and naturally endowed with peculiar strength, irrespective of any form of deformity and made to make or unmake his or her world.
“You have to take your destiny into your own hand, there is ability in disability.
“All you need do is to look inward and identify your strength and use it to develop the world around you,” he said.
Okeke said that the special Day was also aimed at promoting the rights and well-being of persons living with disabilities and not for them to feel that life haD cheated on them.
He said more awareness on condition of persons living with disabilities should be highlighted, to provide fair play ground for both able and disabled in every aspect of socio-political, economic life.
Okeke said that more support for the inclusion of persons living with disabilities in the society as well as assisting them with proper rehabilitation.
He commended the Governor of the state Chief Willie Obiano for to establishing vocational centres in the three senatorial districts in the state.
Okeke said that the vocational centres were to empower the physically challenged in the state to become self-reliant and prove that truly, ability abounds in disability and also to ensure sense of belonging
