Senator Jeff Merkley, D-Ore has claimed that pro-Trump supporters came to burn the Electoral College ballots when they invaded the Capitol on Wednesday and took charge of the building before the reinforcement of security.

Jeff Merkley, in a Tweet on Wednesday, said it took the speedy and brave intervention of floor staff to rescue the ballot from being burnt.

“If our capable floor staff hadn’t grabbed them, they would have been burned by the mob,” he tweeted.

Before the chaos erupted, the ballots had been set to be counted and certified by both houses of Congress.

Meanwhile, Lawmakers, including Vice President Mike Pence were also evacuated from the building as they stalled the counting of the Electoral College votes for their safety.

The National Guard and state and federal police were called in for control, while the mayor of Washington imposed a rare evening curfew after one person was reported to have been shot.
