Supreme Court Justice, Sylvester Nwali Ngwuta, has died.

The senior judge reportedly died in his sleep on Sunday.

Ugwuta was preparing for his retirement upon turning 70 years on March 30th, 2020.

He died in his sleep at his official residence in Abuja.

Before his death, he was arrested by the Department of State Security Services (DSS) on October 8, 2016 on allegations of bribery and corruption. This led to his suspension as a Supreme Court Justice.

The Court of Code Tribunal (CCT) ruled in May 2018 that only the National Judicial Council could determine whether or not Ngwata would face trial.

Later in September 2019, Ngwuta resumed his duties as a Supreme Court Justice after a three year suspension.
