Tiger Woods wins 2019 Masters at Augusta to claim 15th major

The now 15-time major champion had concerns at Augusta two years ago that he was done with golf; last year, he was just pleased to be there.

A first PGA Tour win after back fusion surgery was claimed at the Tour Championship last year, but this is his crowning glory. The impossible comeback has been made possible.

Playing in the final group alongside Francesco Molinari and Tony Finau – groups sent out in threes at an earlier time due to thunderstorms forecast for the afternoon in Georgia – the pressure was on Woods to win a first major title having not held the lead after 54-holes.

The 43-year-old, whose last major title came at Torrey Pines in the 2008 US Open, wore the same mock turtleneck on show the last time he won at Augusta back in 2005.

Open champion Francesco Molinari was well in the hunt, two shots clear, until he found the water in front of the 12th green and then again on the par five 15th.

Here, Woods made no mistake. Birdies on the 15th and 16th sent the 80-time PGA Tour winner two shots clear with two to play as the roars echoed as far as Atlanta.

Two shots ahead with two to play and yet to crack a smile the Tiger of old was back in business. Unruffled by standing ovations on the way in a solid par on 17 allowed for bogey to win a major after 11 long years after Brooks Koepka missed a birdie chance on the last.

Woods’ approach came up short, but he knows his way around that 18th better than most. A chip left him a two putt to win and it was never in doubt.
