The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Projects (SERAP) has asked President Muhammadu Buhari to withdraw conditions imposed on Twitter pending the final determination of the suit at the ECOWAS Court of Justice in Abuja.

SERAP has approached the court, challenging the legality of the suspension of Twitter.

It disclosed this in a tweet via its Twitter handle on Sunday morning.

According to SERAP, the withdrawal will allow the court to render a decision on the central issues in the case and protect the plaintiffs’ rights and interests.

SERAP’s tweet read, “BREAKING: We’ve asked President Buhari to withdraw the impermissible conditions on Twitter, pending the determination of the ECOWAS court suit challenging the legality of #TwitterBan

“This would protect the plaintiffs’ rights and allow the court to render a decision in the case.

“The open letter sent yesterday, read in part: “The conditions make a mockery of the pending case, and create a risk that the course of justice will be seriously impeded or prejudiced in this case. It is in the public interest to keep the streams of justice clear and pure.”

Meanwhile, President Buhari on Friday hinted that he had directed a conditional lifting of the ban placed on Twitter.

He had disclosed this in his nationwide broadcast to Nigerians to mark the nation’s 61st independence.

Buhari directed that the suspension of Twitter be lifted only if the conditions by the presidential committee are met.
