After reaching the final stage of the race for World Trade Organisation’s Director-General, former minister of finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, on Monday, met with President Muhammadu Buhari.

Dressed in her customary attire made from local fabric, Mrs Okonjo-Iweala was led to the meeting on Monday by the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Niyi Adebayo; Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Zubair Dada and the Minister of State, Industry Trade and Investment, Maryam Katagun.

The organisation will name its first female head after Okonjo-Iweala made the final shortlist alongside South Korean trade minister, Yoo Myung-hee.

Much of Okonjo-Iweala’s career was spent as an economist at the World Bank. She eventually rose to the position of managing director, essentially second in command at the institution.

She is currently chair of the board of the international vaccines alliance, Gavi, and is also on Twitter’s board of directors.

The Nigerian would be the first African to lead WTO in its 25-year history.
