2 women appear in court for alleged N15m fraud

Two women, Maria Inuwa and Maria Zakari, on Tuesday, appeared before a Minna Magistrates’ Court for allegedly defrauding one Alhaji Salihu Alhassan of N15 million.


The defendants are facing a three-count charge of criminal conspiracy, cheating and misappropriation. They, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.


According to the prosecutor, Inspector Emmanuel Bassa, Alhaji Salihu Alhassan reported the matter at the station on March 8.


Bassa said the defendants allegedly converted a sum of N15 million the complainant paid to them for a land and a house to their personal use.


He said the offences contravened Sections 97, 309 and 322 of the penal code.


The prosecutor urged the court to adjourn the case to enable the police complete investigation.


Counsel to the defendants, Ms Blessing Etuk, however, urged the court to grant her clients bail.


The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the Magistrate, Hassan Mohammed, granted the defendants bail in the sum of N500, 000 each with one surety in like sum and adjourned the case until April 11.
