The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has confirmed 239 new COVID-19 cases.

The agency made the announcement on Saturday night via its Twitter handle.

A total of 4151, cases have now been recorded in 34 states and the federal capital territory (FCT).

The number of fatalities increased from 117 to 128, while recoveries increased from 679 to 745.

Of the 239 new cases, 97 were recorded in Lagos State, 44 in Bauchi, 29 in Kano, 19 in Katsina, and seven in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

Also, six new COVID-19 cases were recorded in Kwara, five in Oyo, three each in Kaduna and Sokoto, two each in Adamawa, Kebbi, Plateau and Ogun, and one in Ekiti.

Following the recent spike in the number of cases in Lagos and Kano, two most populous states in Nigeria, could become the epicentres of the pandemic in the whole West Africa.

There are now real concerns the pandemic has spread further in the two states than was initially thought with the figures from Lagos and Kano rising as fast developing hotspots.

Lagos remains the epicentre of COVID-19 in Nigeria with 1,764 confirmed cases out of 4,151 across Nigeria, while Kano’s number of confirmed cases rose to 576.

While announcing the new cases, NCDC said that no new state has reported a case in the last 24 hours.

Cross River and Kogi states remain the only states that have not recorded COVID-19 cases in Nigeria.

Meanwhile, Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has expressed displeasure over non-compliance by residents to safety guidelines and directives in the wake of gradual easing of lockdown, warning that government would not hesitate to review the terms of easing if level of compliance continues to nose dive.

Sanwo-Olu, gave the warning while giving an update on COVID-19 situation in the state, during a live broadcast, on Saturday.
