241 new cases, total now 10,819 as Nigeria has second-highest Coronavirus cases in Africa

The number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Nigeria has now reached 10,819 with only 3,239 cases discharged so far and 314 deaths recorded in 35 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

The announcement was made on Tuesday evening by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control.

The agency announced on its official twitter handle that 241 new confirmed cases and 15 deaths were recorded in the country.

No new state has reported a case in the last 24 hours.

The 241 new cases are reported from 14 states – Lagos(142), Oyo(15), FCT(13), Kano(12), Edo(11), Delta(10), Kaduna(9), Rivers(9), Borno(8),Jigawa(4), Gombe(3), Plateau(3), Osun(1), Bauchi(1).

Meanwhile, the World Health Organisation (WHO) on Tuesday said Nigeria has recorded the second-highest cases of coronavirus in Africa.

WHO reported that COVID-19 cases in Africa had risen to over 150, 000, as of June 2.

The WHO Regional Office for Africa in Brazzaville, Congo, gave the update on its official Twitter handle.

“There are over 150,000 confirmed COVID-19 cases on the African continent – with more than 63,000 recoveries and 4,200 deaths,’’ the agency said.

The figures show that South Africa, Nigeria, and Algeria have the highest reported cases on the continent.

According to the report, South Africa has 34,707 cases and 705 deaths, followed by Nigeria with 10,819 confirmed cases and 299 deaths, while Algeria has 9,513 confirmed cases and 661 deaths.

It said Ghana had 8,070 reported cases and 36 deaths, while Cameroon recorded 6,397 confirmed cases and 191 deaths.

The report said Lesotho, Seychelles and Namibia were countries currently with the lowest confirmed cases in the region.

It said Lesotho had only two confirmed cases with zero death, Seychelles had 11 reported cases and zero death, while Namibia recorded 25 confirmed cases with no death.
