627 new COVID-19 cases surge to 15,181, fatality nears 400 in breathless contagion

Nigeria’s tally of confirmed COVID-19 cases rose to 15,181 as 627 new infections were announced by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

Twelve deaths were recorded from the virus on Friday bringing the total number of confirmed deaths from the virus to 399.

The health agency in a tweet Friday night said the new cases were reported in 23 states.

With the latest development, over 1,300 samples tested positive within 48 hours.

While 12 new deaths were recorded, the number of recoveries rose from 4,494 to 4,891 patients.

A total of 397 persons were discharged in the last 24 hours, the highest ever daily recovery in the country.

Lagos maintained its increase in number of new cases on Friday with 229 new infections, while FCT which recorded no case for Thursday, had the second highest new cases with 65 infections.

Abia also recorded a spike in its figure with 54 new COVID-19 cases.

In just 12 days beginning on June 1, a total of 5,019 COVID-19 cases have been confirmed in the country.

However, within the same period, 1,884 persons have recovered, while 113 deaths have occurred.

The 627 new cases were reported from 23 states: Lagos – 229, FCT – 65, Abia – 54, Borno – 42, Oyo- 35, Rivers – 28, Edo – 28, Gombe – 27, Ogun – 21, Plateau – 18, Delta – 18, Bauchi – 10, Kaduna – 10, Benue – 9, Ondo – 8, Kwara – 6 Nasarawa – 4 Enugu – 4 , Sokoto – 3, Niger-3 Kebbi – 3 , Yobe -1 and Kano – 1.

Since the onset of the outbreak in Nigeria in February, NCDC said 88, 432 samples have so far been tested.

A breakdown of the 15,181 confirmed cases shows that Lagos State has so far reported 6,840 cases, followed by FCT – 1,162, Kano – 1, 049, Ogun – 544, Edo – 518, Rivers – 482, Oyo – 469, Borno – 432, Katsina – 411, Kaduna – 402, Bauchi – 402, Gombe – 402, Jigawa – 314, Delta – 243, Ebonyi – 152, Abia – 151, Kwara – 149, Plateau – 148, Sokoto – 132, Nasarawa – 132, Imo – 114,, Zamfara – 76, Ondo – 62, Anambra – 53, Yobe – 53. Osun – 50, Kebbi – 50, Niger – 49, Akwa Ibom – 45, Adamawa – 42, Enugu – 39, Bayelsa – 32, Ekiti – 30, Taraba – 18, Benue – 22, and Kogi – 3.

Meanwhile, the total Coronavirus deaths in West Africa passed 900 on Friday.

According to the West African Health Organisation (WAHO), 902 people have died from the disease in the sub-region out of the 47,060 persons infected.

At least 43 percent of the deaths are in Nigeria which has recorded 399 deaths, more than fatalities recorded in 11 West African countries combined.

With 21,388 recoveries, only about half of the cases in the sub-region are still active.

Nigeria is also the country with the highest number of cases at 15,181 cases, followed by Ghana whose population is six times lesser.

In Africa, 221,627 people have now been infected with COVID-19 after 1,732 cases were recorded on Friday.

Only 113,329 of those cases are, however, active: 5,916 have died while 101,841 have been discharged after recovering.

Globally, there are 7,725,949 million cases so far with 427,689 deaths and 3,919,324 million recoveries.
