A 40-year old man identified as Kabiru Zakari has been sentenced to 40 days in prison following his arrest for stealing sweets and boxers in a supermarket in Abuja.

This sentence took place at Grade 1 Area Court, Karu Abuja on Tuesday.

The Judge, Inuwa Maiwada, gave a verdict after Mr Kabiru, the convict, pleaded guilty to a two-count charge of criminal trespass and theft. Maiwada gave the convict an option of N10,000 if he promises to end his swindling habit.

Mr Kabiru was then ordered to partake in intensive Islamic study, a program made to rejuvenate prisoners – to help put them right back on track.

The complaint, Agida Stephen, a manager at Fordmart Supermarket, Karu, Abuja who caught the convict with the use of CCTV, hiding boxers while purchasing other items like two bottles of water and packets of sweet, explained in the court. The stolen items were said to be worth #4500.

Mr Kabiru was said to have paid for the bottles of water and packets of sweet in order for him to pass the security check without being caught for suspicious reasons. The convict proceeded to exit with the boxers still hidden under his clothes and was caught.

The Prosecutor, Ayotunde Adeyanju, in his earlier explanation to the Judge said, “However, unknown to the convict, that he was captured by the supermarket CCTV and during Police investigation, he confessed to the crime.”

Ayotunde later said the offence contravened sections 348 and 288 on the penal code law.
