A political activist, Mr Pascal Oluchukwu, has called on lawmakers at the Ebonyi House of Assembly not to be rubber stamp to the executive to enable them pass laws that will make positive impacts on the lives of people.

Oluchukwu, who is also the Spokesman for Organisation of Ebonyi Indigenes in Diaspora, made the call in a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday.

He decried lack of autonomy in the state legislature and called for its independence in the process of law making for the people.

According to him, the function of the legislature is to provide oversight on the executive and ensure that all actions and inactions of government are guided by laws and regulations.

“When it comes to law making, the House must ensure the laws are passed with positive interest of the people at heart.

“The idea of quick passage of law in favour of some interests in the state without thorough deliberation by the House can not serve the people of Ebonyi right,” he said.

Oluchukwu, a democracy crusader, said that debates and disagreements were the core of a true democracy.

“Those in current government only find value in what it want the people to believe. It is such a pity that this is where we find ourselves. It’s a shame,” he said.

Oluchukwu urged lawmakers at Ebonyi House of Assembly to carry out their duties with integrity because they were elected to serve the people and not compromise their offices in favour of the executive.
