Actress Genevieve Nnaji to star in Fela’s audio musical show

Veteran actress and director, Genevieve Nnaji, will be starring in an audio adaptation of the Broadway musical ‘FELA’ which will premiere on the Clubhouse app in few days to come.

An audio adaptation of the popular Broadway musical ‘FELA!’ is set to premiere on Saturday, May 15 and Sunday, May 16, 2021.

It was written and directed by filmmaker, Funa Maduka.

According to the director and Producer of the show, Funa Maduka, the Broadway show titled ‘Fela Ten-Twenty’ will portray the “#EndSARS movement in the context of Fela Kuti’s legacy,” Fela Ten-Twenty.

“Fela’s music demanded global engagement with African political thought.” Maduka said in a discussion with a news report.

She continued, “In the aftermath of the October 2020 #EndSars protests, his message still achingly resounds. This production is a love letter to those fighting for a better Nigeria.”

Recall that the #EndSARS protesters were reportedly shot at the Lekki Toll Gate on October 10, 2020, hence the ‘Ten-Twenty’.

The organisers of the show revealed that ace actress, Genevieve, will star as one of the ‘Kalakuta Queens’, representing the musician’s dancers in Fela Ten-Twenty.

In a statement made by the actress, she said she is “honoured to be part of the production”.

“The contemporary issues highlighted are what sold me. This is an artful retelling of Fela’s story and I’m honoured to be a part of it,” she said.

“I grew up on radio plays and the experience is nostalgic for me – the power of voice to influence minds and touch hearts is undeniable.”

A fair share of proceeds from the show will be dispersed to the GEANCO Foundation in support of Girl-child empowerment, grant scholarships to young female victims of terrorism and gender inequality.
