Gov. Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa, on Monday, said that a new governing council would soon be constituted for the state-owned Adamawa university at Mubi.

Fintiri made this disclosure on Monday in Yola shortly after receiving the report of the visitation panels to the university and the state polytechnic in Yola.

The governor said that the panels were set up in June to help find solutions to the lingering problems facing the institutions.

“I am highly delighted on the way and manner the two panels carried out their investigations and presentations; they did a lot of work and I will implement their recommendations.

“I am assuring the panels and Adamawa people that I will constitute a council soon for the university that would be followed by the selection of a substantive Vice Chancellor,” Fintiri said.

He explained that the two panels were constituted with the aim of bringing back sanity to the managements of the schools and restore academic excellence.

In their presentations, Prof. Muhammed Hamisu and Prof. Muhammed Shago, chairmen of the visitation panels to the univeristy and the polytechnic respectively, recommended a review of the institutions’ management structures.

The panel to the state university expressed displeasure that the Vice Chancellor, Registrar and other principal staff except the Librarian, were in offices in acting capacities.

“Since the establishment of the state university in 2002 , only one Vice Chancellor completed his full tenure successfully, all others were removed from office before their tenures ended,” the panel chairman said.

The panels also said that they discovered massive financial irregularities in the two institutions; the panel on the polytechnic queried the astronomical increase in the number of staff from 300 in 2017 to 900 in 2018.

They called for a review of the activities of the institutions’’ departments of finance; academic and non-academic staff recruitments in order to ensure justice and fairness to all parts of the state.
