Afrobeat singer, Chukwuka Ekweani, also known as CKay, has described Afrobeat as a mix of other genres and songs from other countries.

CKay in a recent interview with Tarmac said Afrobeat is heavily influenced by songs from Ghana, South Africa and Congo.

He said there was a time in Nigeria that beats or sounds were like the ones in Ghana and Congo.

It appeared that the artiste also added the influence of South Africa’s Amapiano to the lists.

He said Afrobeat has never been static and they usually borrow sounds.

In his words, he said, “The thing about Nigerian music is, it is very heavy on fusion. We always mixed a whole bunch of things. We try stuff. The sound is never stagnant.

“We always try to take it forward. We try new stuff. We borrow elements from different places. There was a time when afrobeats was heavily influenced by Ghanaian music.

“And there was a time it was heavily influenced by South African music. And there was also another time it was heavily influenced by Makosa from Congo.”
