Again, Nigeria records highest daily Covid cases, two deaths

For the successive day, Nigeria eclipsed its highest daily coronavirus cases with 558 fresh infections.

The new cases, as revealed by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control on Friday morning, tops the 535 announced on Wednesday to become the most in four months.

Yet again, Lagos had the bulk of the cases with 376 followed by Oyo (33), Akwa Ibom (26) and FCT (22).

New infections were also recorded in Imo (15), Bayelsa (13), Ekiti (13), Kano (12), Ogun (11) and Plateau (11).

The remainder is spread among Delta (9), Jigawa (6), Rivers (4), Zamfara (4), Edo (2) and Ebonyi (1).

According to the NCDC, the country’s total cases is currently 178,821 but 164,939 have recovered, leaving about 5,000 active cases.

However, two patients succumbed to the contagion, taking the fatalities to 2,141.

“On the 29th of July 2021, 558 new confirmed cases and 2 deaths were recorded in Nigeria,” the NCDC wrote on its website.

“Till date, 178821 cases have been confirmed, 164930 cases have been discharged and 2141 deaths have been recorded in 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

“The 558 new cases are reported from 16 states- Lagos (376), Oyo (33), Akwa Ibom (26), FCT (22), Imo (15), Bayelsa (13), Ekiti (13), Kano (12), Ogun (11), Plateau (11), Delta (9), Jigawa (6), Rivers (4), Zamfara (4), Edo (2), and Ebonyi (1).

“A multi-sectoral national emergency operations centre (EOC), activated at Level 2, continues to coordinate the national response activities”.
