THE United States Central District Court in California has again postponed the sentencing of convicted fraudster Ramon Abass aka Hushpuppi.
Abbas was arrested in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE) in June 2020 before being handed over to US authorities to face fraud charges running into millions of dollars.
He was due for sentencing on July 11 after it was moved from February 14.
Court documents seen by Premium Times show that Judge Otis Wright has fixed September 21 as the new sentencing date.
“At the request of counsel, the Sentencing is CONTINUED to 9/21/2022 at 1:30 PM before Judge Otis D. Wright II, as to Defendant Ramon Olorunwa Abbas,” the court’s announcement made June 24 read.
Hushpuppi entered into a plea bargain agreement with the US government in July 2021. He pleaded guilty to count two which is “conspiracy to engage in money laundering.”
Despite the plea bargain, he risks a maximum sentence of 20 years imprisonment among other punishments including full restitution.
A deputy police commissioner in Nigeria Abba Kyari was later indicted over his alleged roles in facilitating Hushpuppi’s crime. He is awaiting court’s ruling on the request for his extradition to face charges in the US.
