The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has sued the Edo State governor, Godwin Obaseki, for suspending all union activities across state-owned higher institutions.

The union in a suit filed before the National Industrial Court in Benin by the Ambrose Alli University chapter said the suspension was unconstitutional, illegal, null and void, and ultra vires the powers of the defendants.

Other defendants in the suit are the Edo State government, and Attorney-general and the Commissioner for Justice.

No date has been fixed for hearing of the suit.

Following the strike embarked upon by ASUU, the Edo State government had through the Secretary to the State Government, Osarodion Ogie, announced the suspension of union activities in state-owned institutions.

The government directed the management of the institution to implement a “no-work-no-pay policy,” declare vacant and advertise the position of any staff member that refuses to resume work.
