Benue Speaker inaugurates Committee on Rural Development

Mr Titus Uba, Speaker, Benue House of Assembly, on Wednesday inaugurated the House Committee on Rural Development and Cooperatives, with a call on members to liase with Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), toward improving the rural economy.

“You owe it a duty to ensure a better life for the rural dwellers. Nothing should be spared in the efforts to achieve that,” he said.

In a remark, Chairman of the committee, Mr Kuranen Yagba, noted that about 70 per cent of Benue people live in the rural areas.

He said that there was a need to map out a new rural development policy to improve the lives of the rural dwellers.

Yagba promised that the committee members would ensure that ongoing rural projects were completed, and advised contractors handling the projects to sit up as no defaulter would be spared.

He promised that the committee would design and implement joint technical cooperative programmes and development policies to fight poverty and improve the standard of living in rural areas of the state.

Yagba called on affected MDAs to cooperate with the committee to initiate, implement and manage development programmes among rural communities, especially in the key areas of infrastructure.

Mrs. Agnes Uloko, a committee member, in her remarks, said that the committee would ensure that justice and fairness was done to the rural dwellers.

She also promised that the committee would not disappoint Benue people in the discharge of its duties.
