Buhari addresses Nigerians again amidst concerns over new lockdown protocol

For the third time since the outbreak of the deadly coronavirus in Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari will address the nation this evening to brief Nigerians on his government’s latest COVID-19 containment policy.

A timetable for getting out of the month old lockdown he imposed on Lagos, Ogun States and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) is expected in the nationwide broadcast scheduled for 8 p.m.

A statement by his Special Adviser on Media, Mr Femi Adesina on Monday in Abuja urged all electronic media houses to hook up to the network service of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) to relay the broadcast.

Buhari had during his first and second broadcast sometime after the pandemic entered Nigeria through an Italian national imposed a total lockdown on Lagos, Ogun and the FCT, the three most affected areas in the country by the virus.

Since the lockdown, two weeks at the first instance, Kano and other states, especially in the northern part of the country have recorded significant number of infections including deaths.

It is likely that the President will impose a similar lockdown on Kano in particular and more states, while some form of relaxation in the policy could be announced for Lagos, Ogun and FCT.

Television, radio and other electronic media stations are enjoined to hook up to the network services of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) and Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) respectively for the broadcast.
