Confusion follows Buhari’s speech as Nigerians fail to recognise own Armed Forces’ flag

As the sour fruits of years of neglect of civic education takes a toll on the Nigerian psyche, many citizens who watched the televised address of President Muhammadu Buhari were aroused by a second strange flag flanking the left side of the President.

“What flag is that? “Whose flag is that?” Which flag is that?” “Where did he get that flag from?” “Who put that flag behind the President?” “Why are there two flags?”, are some of the questions trending since the telecast.

For a nation at war, whose armed forces are paying the ultimate price hourly as we write, this ignorance is symptomatic of a general collapse in the organising principles at the foundation of the Nigerian polity.

The two flags behind President Buhari have been the same flags behind every President since independence. One Flag is green-white-green for Nigeria and the second is the Flag of the Colors of the Nigerian Armed Forces (Army, Navy and Air Force) of which the President is the Commander in Chief.
